UPC was selected as a finalist for the Climate Smart Cities Challenge for Makindye Ssabagabo, Uganda, https://climatesmart.citieschallenge.org/makindye-ssabagabo/ , then formed a team with five technology companies, including lightweight interlocking building blocks, strawboard, low water consuming toilets, recycled plastic building materials and organic waste management, to be awarded the project. UN Habitat and the Swedish Government, along with the Municipality of Makindye Ssabagabo wanted a low carbon affordable housing demonstration project that could scale up to solve global problems.
UPC engaged a participatory process to collaborate with the community in achieving an affordable housing neighborhood that would reduce both embodied and operational carbon emissions, while creating construction businesses and inclusive jobs in the green circular economy.
